Write fast, read faster
By Aditya Kuber   10 December 2008

Extreme III SD 8GBOf the many things that photographers fret over and spend thousands of rupees in, memory cards, sadly doesn’t always feature on top of the list. As long as the capacity is huge, most (amateur or serious amateur) photographers don’t worry too much about the other features.

What other features can a memory card offer? Speed, for one, is crucial especially when you’re shooting RAW images or even Fine Quality images on higher-megapixel cameras. The ability to survive in extreme conditions is also critical. Looking at a wide range of options, we zeroed in on the SanDisk Range and took a close look at the Extreme III series 8GB SD card.

The Extreme III SD writes and reads at a minimum of 20 MB/sec – an intensely fast speed. Using ESP (Enhanced Super-Parallel Processing Technology), the Extreme III series is tested to work from -13 to +185 degrees Fahrenheit. We hope you don’t have to endure either end of that spectrum, but it’s nice to know that something will work (don’t be too sure about the camera!)

In our experience, write speed to memory cards can be rather frustrating. Be it a CF (I or II) or SD or even Sony’s Memory Sticks, if an image is being written and you have to wait it is a good idea to shop around for a better card.

Speed

Using the Extreme III series is a bit of a step down from the available Extreme IV series. Having said that, these cards do blaze through write times allowing you to virtually go through unstopped. Ideal card for fast shooters (those working for the media or even those who shoot landscapes and can’t afford to lose time when shooting that brilliantly lit view!), the Extreme III 8GB SD card is a treat to use.

Read/write speed is not always only attached to the shooting stage. There were times when users would have to wait endlessly as their photos were being transferred to their computers. Whether you use an external card reader or hook up the camera itself, the Extreme III series will always be fast. In fact, if you can couple it with the newly launched FireWire reader, you could save yourself some more precious time.

Bundled

Packaged with the box for the card comes a lifetime manufacturer’s warranty and a crucial CD that lets you recover lost data if you accidentally format your card with pictures on it. You just need to stop using the card immediately and use the included software to recover data.

Features and Cost

Up to 30MB/s sequential read/write speeds:

  • Extremely durable card tested to work under impact and in harsh temperature conditions
  • Priority technical support both online and via phone
  • Solid reliability backed by a limited lifetime warranty

SanDisk Extreme III SDHC 30MB/s Edition cards are available in India since October. The retail price is Rs. 2,499 for the 4GB card and Rs. 4,499 for the 8GB card.
